Spectroscopic Confirmation of Multiple Red Galaxy - Galaxy Mergers in Ms 1054

چکیده
We present follow-up spectroscopy of the galaxy cluster MS 1054–03 (z = 0.83) confirming that at least six of the nine merging galaxy pairs identified by van Dokkum et al. (1999) are indeed bound systems: they have projected separations of Rs < 10h −1 kpc and relative line-of sight velocities of ∆v < 165 km s. For the remaining three pairs, we were unable to obtain redshifts of both constituent galaxies. To identify a more objective sample of merging systems, we select bound red galaxy pairs (Rs ≤ 30h −1 kpc, ∆v ≤ 300 km s) from our sample of 121 confirmed cluster members: galaxies in bound red pairs make up 15.7± 3.6% of the cluster population. The (B −Ks) color-magnitude diagram shows that the pair galaxies are as red as the E/S0 members and have a homogeneous stellar population. The red pair galaxies span a large range in luminosity and internal velocity dispersion to include some of the brightest, most massive members (L > L, σ1D > 200 km s ); these bound galaxy pairs must evolve into E/S0 members by z ∼ 0.7. These results combined with MS1054’s high merger fraction and reservoir of likely future mergers indicates that most, if not all, of its early-type members evolved from (passive) galaxy-galaxy mergers at z . 1. Direct evidence for hierarchical formation of massive early - type galaxies
We present results from a morphological study of the distant X-ray cluster MS 1054–03 at z = 0.83. We have obtained a large, two color HST WFPC2 mosaic of this cluster, and measured redshifts of 186 galaxies in the MS 1054–03 field with the 10m Keck telescope. Of 81 spectroscopically confirmed cluster galaxies observerd with HST, 13 are merger systems. Most of these mergers will likely evolve i...
متن کاملA High Merger Fraction in the Rich Cluster Ms 1054−03 at Z = 0.83: Direct Evidence for Hierarchical Formation of Massive Galaxies1,2
We present a morphological study of the galaxy population of the luminous X-ray cluster MS 1054−03 at z = 0.83. The sample consists of 81 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members in a 3×2 h−1 50 Mpc area imaged in F606W and F814W with WFPC2. We find thirteen ongoing mergers in MS 1054−03, comprising 17 % of the L ∼ > L∗ cluster population. Most of these mergers will likely evolve into lumino...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملHst Photometry and Keck Spectroscopy of the Rich Cluster Ms 1054 – 03 : Morphologies
We present a study of 81 I-band selected, spectroscopically-confirmed members of the X-ray cluster MS 1054−03 at z = 0.83. Redshifts and spectral types were determined from Keck spectroscopy. Morphologies and accurate colors were determined from a large mosaic of HST WFPC2 images in RF606W and IF814W , corresponding to U and B in the restframe. Early-type galaxies constitute only 44 % of this g...
متن کاملA High Fraction of Mergers in the cluster MS 1054 – 03 at
We used the Hubble Space Telescope to take a wide field, multicolor image of the high redshift cluster MS1054–03 at z = 0.83. The Keck telescope was used to take 200 redshifts in the field. We have a total of 81 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members with deep WFPC2 imaging. A surprisingly large number of these cluster members are mergers: 13 out of 77 galaxies are classified as merger rem...
